Warung Sate Kambing Pak Maksudi

Laksmi Pamuntjak

Jakarta Selatan

The window panes are a faded turquoise, what passes as curtains are tinted a deep, archaic moss green, and six degrees of Fanta and Green Spot bottles line the walls. The open kitchen is clean and quietly confident, and even if the noise level is as you would expect from a roadside eatery, there is something about the place that makes you want to linger — and smoke a fag or two.

The sate is borderline good (the texture is uneven, the sweet soy sauce too thick) and people come here for the gulai kambing (goat curry), which tastes halfway between a very good sop kaki kambing (goat leg soup, filled with giblets) and a light, fragrant curry.
